Rise and Shine

A student observer from our local university recently asked me, “Mind if I ask you a personal question?” Even as I replied, “Sure,” I wondered where this was going. He wanted to know what time I went to bed at night, a perfectly sensible thing to ask by a prospective teacher.

I told him that I wake up around five-fifteen most mornings, usually without an alarm clock. I like to ease into my day over coffee and emails and try to fit in some writing and reading if I can. Sometimes some grading too.

Notice I hadn’t answered his question yet? I went on that since I start so early, I usually start shutting down around eight at night. My brain is toast by then. And just as I ease into my day, I ease out of it as well. I’m usually in bed by nine-thirty. Ten if I’m pushing it though I’ve been known to fall asleep on the couch by eight-thirty if it’s been a long week.

“Oh”, he said. Seeing his dismay, I asked, “What time did you go to bed last night?”

He replied, “Eleven-thirty.”

I reminded him that I had almost thirty years on him and that I was sure I had stayed up much later when I was younger. When I think back on it now, I realize that I’ve always been a morning person even if I didn’t feel that way Monday morning after the time change. So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that I only made it through the first twenty minutes of the newly relaunched Cosmos series. It was visually stunning and informative, but Neil deGrasse Tyson’s voice lulled me to sleep. I’ll try again tonight at a much earlier time and then head to bed with the rest of the senior citizens.

I’m participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. Won’t you join me?

  1. I’m an early to bed, early to rise person myself. I’ve never been a night owl. I’m almost always turning out the light by 9:30 – and I’m up at 5:30 (even though I teach elementary) to help get my middle school son going in the morning.

    I think I’ve always been a morning person…

  2. My sister says I hit a wall at 9 – and can fall asleep in the middle of a conversation! I totally sympathize! I am enjoying all the entries. and thank you for sharing “slices of your life” with us!
